Overview
The United States and Turkey have proposed a plan to re-export approximately $280 million worth of American-made weaponry to Ukraine. The package, which was submitted to the U.S. Congress for review on August 6, includes 70 M39 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, 12 M270 multiple launch rocket systems, over 2,500 M26 rockets, and 47,000 cluster artillery projectiles.
Russia has responded to the proposal with warnings, stating that the transfer would “certainly undermine mutual trust” between Moscow and both Washington and Ankara. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova characterized the move as opening a “Pandora’s box” that could lead to increased destruction and damage bilateral relations with Russia. Zakharova also highlighted perceived contradictions in Turkey’s position, noting that Turkish officials had previously suggested the country would avoid transferring “lethal” weapons to Kyiv.
