US wolf management and rancher support policies

Overview

Following Executive Order 14425, ‘Supporting America’s Ranchers’, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has initiated efforts to mitigate wolf predation on livestock. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins has urged state partners to reassess wolf management policies and increase engagement with producers, noting that lethal removal may be an option when permitted by law.

To support the economic impact of predation, the USDA’s Farm Service Agency has increased Livestock Indemnity Program payment rates to cover up to 100 percent of the market value for qualifying losses. Additionally, the USDA has announced approximately $1.8 billion in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) payments for 2026, including significant funding for Grassland CRP as part of the ‘Ranchers First Initiative’ to rebuild American cattle herds.
