USA 32 spy satellite fragmentation

Overview

The American Cold War-era spy satellite USA 32, also known as ‘Farrah III’, unexpectedly fragmented in low Earth orbit on September 13, 2026. Launched in 1988 via a Titan II rocket, the satellite was operated by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) for electronic intelligence missions, specifically to intercept Soviet radar and radio signals.

The fragmentation occurred at an altitude of approximately 775 kilometers, creating a cloud of debris in a congested orbital lane. The U.S. Space Force has confirmed the event through its Space-Track surveillance system.

While the exact cause of the disintegration remains unconfirmed, several theories are being investigated. These include internal failures such as pressure ruptures from aging propellant or battery cells, thermal cycling issues, collisions with space debris, meteorite impacts, or potential space weapon testing.
