US‑China forced‑labour trade dispute

Entities: United States Department of Homeland Security · Department of Homeland Security · Vladimir Putin · Scott Bessent · Markwayne Mullin

Overview

In late July 2026 the United States announced its largest single expansion of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List, adding 43 Chinese companies and bringing the total barred entities to 187. The move blocks imports from these firms unless importers can prove the goods are not produced with forced labour, and it is accompanied by a new 12.5 % tariff on most Chinese imports and a ban on newly‑developed Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots for security reasons.

China’s Ministry of Commerce denounced the actions as “economic coercion” and warned of “necessary measures” in response. Vice‑Premier He Lifeng raised the issue in a video call with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and trade envoy Jamieson Greer, signalling serious concern and the possibility of counter‑measures.

The escalation occurs ahead of a scheduled Trump‑Xi summit at the White House on 24 September, with additional meetings being considered at the APEC summit in Shenzhen (November) and the G20 summit in Miami (December). The dispute therefore intertwines trade restrictions, forced‑labour allegations, and high‑level diplomatic engagement.
