In late July 2026, federal agents seized a massive cocaine shipment at the Calexico Port of Entry, California. More than 1,000 pounds (454.6 kg) were hidden in a commercial truck’s floorboards, valued at about $20 million, making it the second-largest seizure in the Southern District of California that year. The driver, 44-year-old Mexican national Jose Manuel Lopez Lopez, was arrested and faces a potential life sentence after pleading not guilty to illegal importation charges. The operation involved the DEA, DOJ, and the California Homeland Security Task Force under ‘Operation Take Back America’. A few days later, CBP officers reported two separate cocaine interceptions at Laredo, Texas, on the World Trade Bridge and Juarez-Lincoln Bridge. On July 20, a secondary inspection at the World Trade Bridge uncovered 37.4 lb of cocaine in a Kenworth trailer driven by a 31-year-old Mexican man. Two days later, at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, officers found 50.4 lb of cocaine in a Kia Sportage driven by a 37-year-old Mexican woman. Together, the seizures involved roughly 87.8 lb of cocaine worth approximately $1.17 million. Both drivers were arrested and turned over to ICE officials. By mid-August, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported broader trends of increased interdiction. In the El Paso Sector, drug seizures rose by approximately 66 percent during the first ten months of fiscal year 2026. Cocaine remains the primary substance trafficked in that sector, with 1,241 pounds seized, representing a 168 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year. Further reporting on August 18 highlighted significant narcotics activity in San Diego, where agents seized over 8,300 pounds of narcotics in July—including fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine—with an estimated street value exceeding $67 million.
