In early August 2026 2026, Utah was battling an unprecedented wildfire season. Officials reported 747 fires that had scorched more than 455,000 acres, with the Widemouth 2 Fire alone expanding to over 68,000 acres and prompting evacuations of Fillmore, Kanosh and Meadow. Contributing factors include persistent drought, warm winter temperatures, and record-low snowpack. The Rocky Canyon Fire near Henefer has emerged as another significant incident impacting local communities. Economic impacts have become substantial, with wildfire-related costs reaching an estimated $33 million. Wade Snyder, deputy state fire management officer with the Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands, noted that inflation and increasing fire sizes are driving up expenses. Governor Spencer Cox indicated that the state has a wildfire fund of more than $120 million available to manage the ongoing crisis.
