Reality television personalities Michelle Le and Porsha Williams have shared their personal experiences undergoing hysterectomies due to uterine fibroids. Michelle Le, a participant on ‘Married at First Sight’, underwent a hysterectomy in May because of severe fibroids, a procedure that has left her unable to carry a pregnancy. Porsha Williams, known for ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’, revealed she underwent an emergency partial hysterectomy after doctors discovered 21 fibroids, including one the size of a cantaloupe. Williams shared her experience during an interview on ‘CBS Mornings’, Mornings’ and in an essay for Glamour, noting that she had previously undergone a myomectomy and uterine fibroid embolization, but the growths returned. She had initially attributed symptoms like migraines, fatigue, and prolonged menstrual cycles to perimenopause. While the emergency surgery—which occurred after an MRI at a fertility clinic—resulted in the loss of her fertility, she was able to retain her ovaries. Williams is now using her platform to encourage women to advocate for their health and avoid self-diagnosing medical symptoms.
