Utility supply disruptions and water security risks in Romania RO

Utility providers in Romania have announced scheduled disruptions to water and gas supplies in several regions. In Piatra Neamț, ApaServ scheduled repairs on a main water transport pipe for August 11–12, 2026, affecting multiple neighborhoods and surrounding communes. Additionally, local authorities in the Buzău region have issued notices regarding the need for responsible water use in Valea Slănicului and announced a natural gas supply interruption in the commune of Amaru. Broader water security challenges have emerged due to a prolonged drought. As of August 9, 2026, the filling coefficient of 39 major reservoirs monitored by Apele Române and Hidroelectrica stands at 70.63%, a figure projected to drop to 66% by the end of August. The drought has impacted 181 localities with centralized water systems, with Alba, Neamț, and Bihor identified as among the most affected counties. Seven river sectors have reached Tier III, which is the “highest level of water restriction.” In Curtea de Argeș, health authorities reported that water samples showed free residual chlorine levels exceeding the maximum permitted limit of 0.50 mg/l.
