Utsunomiya LRT ridership and expansion
Overview
The Utsunomiya LRT ‘Lightline’ in Tochigi Prefecture reached a milestone of 15 million cumulative users within three years of its August 2023 opening, exceeding initial demand projections. The system has reportedly decreased commuting times and contributed to a population increase of 5,600 people along its route.
Following an application for national certification to extend the line to the west side of JR Utsunomiya Station, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has approved the extension plan. The project will add a 4.9km stretch with 12 planned stops, connecting industrial hubs to urban and administrative centers. The extension, estimated to cost 69.8 billion yen, is targeted to begin operations in March 2036, with construction expected to start around November 2027.
