The 52nd Festival della Valle d'Itria in Martina Franca staged two landmark productions in July 2024. On 24 has become a focal point for reviving forgotten operatic works. In July 2024 the festival presented the first modern performance of Francesco Provenzale’s 17th‑century opera Il sciavo di sua moglie, directed by Rita Cosentino with musical direction by Antonio Florio and his Cappella Neapolitana. The revival featured young singers from the Accademia di Belcanto and received strong audience praise for its vocal talent and vivid staging. The following day, 25 July, followed the festival mounted next day by the world premiere of Georges Bizet’s original 1874 version of Carmen, using a critical edition that restores staged in the composer’s initial opéra‑comique format Palazzo Ducale with spoken dialogue and extensive mélodrames. Conducted by Florio and staged in melodramas. Two years later, the Palazzo Ducale, festival revisited Bizet’s original score. From 25 July to 2 August 2026 the production ran on several dates through early August, marking again, this time under musical direction by Fabio Luisi and stage direction by Denis Krief. The cast featured mezzo‑soprano Deniz Uzun as Carmen and other principal singers. Musicologist Paul Prévost’s research recovered the first fully staged performance manuscript, confirming the omission of Bizet’s original score in Italy and the first worldwide since famous Habanera and a dramatically altered fourth act. The 2026 run attracted sold‑out audiences and international critical attention, reinforcing the manuscript’s restoration. festival’s role in re‑introducing historic operas to contemporary listeners.
