Valve Steam and software ecosystem updates

Overview

Valve has implemented a series of updates to its software ecosystem, beginning with technical patches for Team Fortress 2 and stability improvements for the Steam Client Beta. Initial updates addressed game crashes, view jitter, and hardware-specific issues involving the Steam Deck and older CPUs.

Subsequent major updates to the Steam Client Beta introduced the ‘Achievement Sets’ system, which allows developers to categorize achievements into collections—such as separating base game content from DLC or seasonal events—to prevent disruptions to a player’s completion status. Under this system, base game achievements are displayed with blue progress indicators, while DLC achievements use purple. This ensures players can maintain a 100% completion status for the main game without requiring additional expansions. Each set features its own progress bar, and completing a set awards a ‘set complete’ trophy to the user’s profile. Additionally, the system allows developers to archive achievements that are no longer obtainable, such as those from limited-time holiday events.

Approximately 17 titles, including Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2, have been reported to support this new system. If developers add new achievements to an existing set later, the previously earned completion status will be preserved.

Furthermore, Valve transitioned the Linux client to a native 64-bit architecture using a Steam Runtime container to improve consistency across various Linux distributions. The client beta also includes a redesigned achievements page and improved friend comparisons.
