The Salvadoran political party VAMOS has begun internal elections to renew its National Executive Council before the current term expires on September 25, 2026. Two main leadership factions are competing for control. Cesia Rivas de López, the current General Secretary, has registered a national slate focused on team-based leadership. Meanwhile, Deputy Claudia Ortiz has registered the ‘Avancemos’ slate, seeking the General Secretary position with a platform centered on modernizing and professionalizing the party to better compete against the ruling government. As the election process continues, Deputy Claudia Ortiz has reported internal conflicts within the party. Ortiz alleges that certain factions are attempting to have her expelled to prevent her candidacy. She claims these efforts are driven by individuals aligned with the administration of President Nayib Bukele. Ortiz maintains her goal is to transform VAMOS into a “more democratic and technically capable alternative” for the country. She also noted that, currently, no opposition political party possesses the “realistic capacity to compete directly with the ruling officialist party” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
