The province of Van, Turkey, is marking the 15th anniversary of the devastating 2011 earthquakes. The initial 7.2 magnitude event in the Tabanlı region, followed by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in November 2011, resulted in 644 fatalities and widespread destruction in Erciş and the city center. On October 23, 2026, residents in Van and Erciş gathered at cemeteries in the Alkanat and Beyazıt neighborhoods to honor victims. Survivors shared testimonies regarding the immense destruction, noting that nearly one-third of the Erciş district was reduced to rubble, and highlighted the lasting emotional trauma and the struggle to rebuild lives. While urban areas have been transformed through new housing construction, experts continue to raise concerns regarding seismic preparedness and ongoing activity. Yakup Ebiri of the Chamber of Civil Engineers Van Branch has emphasized the need for a comprehensive inventory of building stock to identify high-risk structures. Additionally, geophysics expert Associate Professor Hamdi Alkan reported that over 20,000 earthquakes have been recorded in the Van area between 2011 and 2026. Alkan specifically noted that since 2015, approximately 30 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 4.0 have occurred in the corridor between the Van Fault Zone and the Erciş Fault Zone, highlighting the need for further scientific investigation into these areas.
