A monument in the ‘Giardino dei Giusti’ in Canicattì, Sicily, dedicated to Judge Antonino Saetta was vandalized. The damage targeted the memorial leaf located in the municipal villa. Mayor Vincenzo Corbo described the act as an “ignoble and targeted” gesture and affirmed the city’s rejection of mafia culture. Following the incident, the municipality replaced a stolen commemorative plaque honoring Stefano Saetta, the judge’s son. During the restoration process, a new commemorative leaf was also added to the garden to honor Carabinieri Marshal Giuliano Guazzelli. These actions coincided with the ‘Settimana della Legalità’ (Legality Week), an event dedicated to honoring victims of organized crime. To conclude the ‘Week of Legality,’ a mural dedicated to Judge Antonino Saetta and his son Stefano Saetta was inaugurated at the Verga Institute in Canicattì. The artwork is part of the regional ‘Murals of Legality’ initiative. Regional Councilor Giusi Savarino attended the ceremony, noting that memory serves as a “vital tool for building awareness regarding legality and respect for institutions.” By placing the mural within a school, officials intend to involve younger generations in preserving the historical testimony of the duo, who were killed by the mafia 38 years ago.
