Vandalism of hiking trail markings in Šar Planina
Overview
Vandalism has targeted the newly installed winter hiking trail markings on the approximately 11-kilometer path between Popova Šapka and Titov Vrv in the Šar Planina mountains. More than 45 of the 112 installed poles have been destroyed, damaged, or removed, with financial damages estimated at a minimum of 8,000 euros.
The markings were part of the ‘Slavkov – Marking of Mountaineering Paths in North Macedonia’ initiative, which received support from the embassies of Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, as well as Skopska Pivara. The project utilized local volunteers and small businesses from the Tetovo and Bogovinje municipalities.
Officials and the Austrian Embassy have emphasized that the destruction poses a significant safety risk to hikers, as these high-contrast poles are essential for navigation during heavy snow, fog, or high winds. Following an inspection of the site by police and representatives from Mali Sharr National Park on August 19, 2026, authorities are expected to investigate and take legal action against those responsible.
