To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s declaration ‘Nostra aetate’, three Vatican Dicasteries released a joint document approved by Pope Leo XIV. Initially titled ‘A Journey of Hope’, the note serves to renew the Catholic Church’s commitment to religious freedom, universal fraternity, and interreligious dialogue. The document assesses progress made since 1965, calling for an end to fundamentalism and rejecting the use of religion to justify violence, terrorism, or discrimination. It encourages believers to move away from logics of defense or conquest in favor of coexistence. Subsequent details regarding the note, titled ‘A Path of Hope’, highlight the Church’s relationship with the Jewish people and the historical rejection of antisemitism. The document acknowledges that recent Middle East conflicts, specifically the events of October 7, 2023, and the war in the Gaza Strip, have strained these relations and caused communication bridges to falter. While the Church maintains its missionary mandate, the note clarifies that proselytism is no longer viewed as a meaningful way to encounter others, advocating instead for mutual encounter without requiring religions to renounce their unique identities. On the 61st anniversary of the declaration, the Vatican released a document titled ‘Journey of Hope: 60 Years of Interreligious Dialogue and Brotherhood in the Light of the Nostra aetate Declaration’. In Poland, commentators Paweł Lisicki and Grzegorz Górny critiqued the text, suggesting it lacks clarity regarding the distinction between biblical Judaism and post-biblical Talmudic Judaism. They argued the document’s approach to combating antisemitism remains ambiguous due to a failure to define specific theological distinctions.
