Pope Leo XIV has authorized the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to issue decrees recognizing the heroic virtues of six individuals, granting them the title of Venerable. This decision was announced during an audience with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery. The group of newly recognized individuals includes Margarita Bavosi, an Argentine laywoman of the Focolare Movement known as ‘Luminosa’; Friedrich Kaiser Depel, a Peruvian prelate German-born missionary and founder of the Missionary Sisters first territorial prelate of Jesus Verbo and Vittima; Caravelí, Peru; and Oreste Marengo, a Salesian bishop who served in India and spoke over twenty local languages. Other individuals granted the title are Domenico Pogliani, a priest from the Archdiocese of Milan who founded charitable institutions; Alessandro Vitetti, a priest from the Diocese of Rossano-Cariati; and Fra Daniele Natale (also known as Michele Natale), Natale or Daniele di San Giovanni Rotondo), a Capuchin friar and spiritual son of Saint Padre Pio. Regarding Margarita Bavosi, Friedrich Kaiser Depel, new details indicate that during his service in Peru, he worked to provide water supplies and rebuild the local cathedral following a 1960 earthquake. For Margarita Bavosi, she was born in Buenos Aires in 1941 to an Italian immigrant family. A consecrated laywoman within the Focolare Movement, she led a community in Paraná, Argentina, in 1966 and later co-led the movement in Spain for 14 years. She died in 1985 in Albano Laziale, Italy, at age 43 from atypical pulmonary fibrosis. While this recognition marks a decisive step toward beatification, it does not constitute beatification itself. To proceed further, the Church must typically verify a miracle attributed to the individual’s intercession or a declaration of martyrdom.
