Vatican removal of priest Massimo Biancalani
Overview
The Vatican's Dicastery for the Clergy has rejected appeals by priest Massimo Biancalani, confirming his removal from pastoral leadership at the Santa Maria Maggiore a Vicofaro and San Niccolò a Ramini parishes in the Pistoia region of Italy.
The decision concludes a decade-long canonical process following Biancalani’s practice of hosting up to 200 migrants within parish facilities. While the priest described his work as a “field church” providing refuge, the Diocese and local authorities cited several issues, including the loss of community life, lack of authorization for dormitory-style housing, and the creation of unsanitary fire hazards and public health risks.
In September 2025, the Diocese of Pistoia ordered Biancalani to transition to a role within the diocesan missionary apostolate. Biancalani refused this reassignment and filed an appeal, alleging his removal violated canon law. The Dicastery rejected the appeal, citing that Biancalani had been “negligent in his pastoral duties to his parishioners,” which constitutes grounds for removal under the Code of Canon Law.
Reports indicate the situation led to significant local tension, including the flight of parishioners, police-led evictions, and concerns regarding crime and declining property values. Although the removal is strictly pastoral and does not suspend Biancalani from the priesthood—he remains authorized to celebrate sacraments—he no longer holds legal representation or administrative responsibility for the two communities.
