Vehicle accidents on Nigerian expressways
Overview
A series of significant vehicle accidents occurred on major expressways in Nigeria during mid-October 2026.
On October 13, a 40-foot HOWO truck collided with two commercial passenger buses at the Berger Bus Stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that five passengers, including a driver, sustained critical injuries. The incident caused major traffic congestion near the Otedola Bridge.
On October 17, a fatal accident involving a diesel tanker occurred on the Ojoo–Iwo Road Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State. The tanker, carrying 45,000 litres of diesel, reportedly suffered brake failure, causing it to somersault and collide with several vehicles, including Nissan Micra commercial cars. The crash resulted in five deaths and left 10 others needing rescue. Emergency services, including the Oyo State Fire Service and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), responded to manage the scene and mitigate fire risks from the spilled fuel.
Other fatal incidents were reported in Nigeria during the same period. In Lagos, a collision between a Suzuki commercial bus and a pickup van resulted in two deaths. In Plateau State, a collision involving a commercial bus and a tricycle caused the deaths of a father and son.
