On September 15, a suspected car thief driving a stolen Tesla crashed onto a busy boardwalk in Pacific Beach, San Diego. The vehicle reportedly reached speeds of approximately 70 miles per hour before striking a 25-year-old woman, causing serious injuries, and crashing into a transformer. Following the crash, the suspect attempted to flee on foot. Bystanders, including witness Alex Srour, pursued and restrained the individual until police arrived. The incident was partially captured on smart glasses worn by one of the witnesses. On Wednesday, the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Juan Antonio Gonzaba, pleaded not guilty. The incident reportedly began when Gonzaba allegedly stole the Tesla in La Jolla and fled from police. The victim sustained serious injuries, including fractured ribs, fractured vertebrae, and an abdominal laceration. Gonzaba, who has an extensive criminal history involving assault, burglary, and grand theft, faces a potential prison sentence of up to 24 years and eight months if convicted on all charges. During his court appearance, reports indicated he acted erratically, including banging his head against a glass wall.
