Italy continues to face significant vehicle theft trends across multiple regions, ranking fourth in Europe with 231 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. Nationally, approximately 285 cars and 90 motorcycles or scooters are stolen daily, totaling over 136,000 vehicles annually. In Lazio, nearly 25,000 vehicles were stolen over a twelve-month period, with Rome recording approximately 16,000 cases. In Emilia-Romagna, theft totals reached 3,780 vehicles, with Bologna remaining a primary hotspot. Recent data from the Ministry of the Interior highlights specific vulnerabilities in the province of Rimini, where 381 vehicles were stolen over a 12-month period in 2024, averaging more than one theft per day. This total includes 188 cars, 89 motorcycles, and 104 scooters. Rimini ranks second in the Emilia-Romagna region for scooter thefts and third for motorcycle thefts. Piemonte also reported high volumes, with 4,838 vehicles stolen, concentrated largely in Torino. In Veneto, over 1,900 vehicles were stolen, while Friuli Venezia Giulia reported more than 500 thefts, with Trieste identified as a major epicenter for two-wheeled thefts. The high incidence of two-wheeled vehicle theft in areas like Rimini has led to increased instances of lock picking and remote control cloning in poorly monitored parking areas. Recent law enforcement activity has focused on recovering stolen assets and addressing related fraud. In Terlizzi, Carabinieri recovered a stolen Iveco Daily van. In the Giovinazzo area, security patrols intercepted a damaged Audi Q8 that suspects attempted to steal by using another vehicle of the same model to push it out of a residential complex. Additionally, authorities in Spezia uncovered a fraudulent vehicle inspection scheme, and the Associazione Bancaria Italiana (ABI) has launched the ‘Territori Sicuri’ observatory to combat evolving criminal tactics.
