The 83rd Venice International Film Festival concluded with the Danish drama ‘Woman Unknown’, directed by May el-Toukhy, winning the Golden Lion for Best Film. The film, which examines the social consequences for women in post-WWII Denmark, was the only female-directed film in the main competition. In a rare move, the jury, presided over by Maggie Gyllenhaal, voted unanimously to award both the top film prize and the acting prize to the same production. It was later revealed that Arcel had been receiving unemployment benefits and had to return to Copenhagen to report to a local labor office just days before her award, as she had no other film engagements at the time. Other festival winners included John Malkovich for Best Actor in ‘Wild Horse Nine’, Ilya Khrzhanovsky for Best Direction for ‘DAU’, and Lee Chang-dong for the Grand Jury Prize for ‘Possible Love’. The jury was presided over by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
