Venice officials are considering significant increases to the daily entry fee for day-trippers to combat overtourism and manage the city’s maintenance costs. Local authorities have indicated that current fees of 5 to 10 euros are insufficient to act as an effective deterrent. Proposed changes for 2027 include raising the daily charge to as much as 30 euros, with some discussions suggesting a limit of 50 euros. Michele Zuin, the city's budget and taxation councillor, noted that the current fee is “no longer an effective deterrent because it is affordable for almost everyone.” The city is also exploring a dynamic pricing model based on peak demand, extending the fee collection period to include months like March and September, and increasing the overnight tourist tax. While the current system generated over 5.2 million euros from approximately 680,000 tickets in 2026, officials emphasize that the primary objective of the price hike is not to increase municipal revenue. Instead, the goal is to deter mass tourism and use funds to mitigate environmental impacts, such as waste management and structural damage caused by ship wakes. Any significant increase in the fee cap will require approval from the Italian national government and parliament.
