In early June 2026 Venice rolled out stricter visitor regulations, including a new tourist tax, and promoted off‑peak attractions to disperse crowds. Newly elected mayor Simone Venturini then proposed raising the day‑tourist entry charge from the €5‑10 range to as much as €50 on selected high‑traffic days, aiming to curb overtourism and fund city services. Exemptions were set for children under 14, local residents and tourists staying overnight. The city council formally backed the plan on 7 July, confirming the €50 charge for 60 designated peak days and reiterating the exemptions. Between April and July 2026 the fee was applied on 60 days, collected from more than 650,000 day visitors and generating over €5 million in revenue – the highest amount recorded since the scheme began. City officials later confirmed the €5 million figure as a record for the program. Early bookings were charged €5, while last‑minute tickets cost €10. Tourists staying longer than a day are exempt from the day fee but must pay an overnight accommodation tax. Venturini has suggested increasing On 26 July the municipality reported that the €5 million revenue figure was confirmed, noting that visitor numbers had not declined despite the charge. The city plans to continue the fee in the next season and is evaluating possible higher rates, still subject to €30‑50 on selected dates, but any change requires approval from the national government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Meloni’s national government. Critics warn the steep increase could infringe on limit freedom of movement, make Venice exclusive, harm local businesses and raise constitutional concerns, while supporters argue it is essential to protect the Venice’s fragile historic city fabric and its limited housing stock.
