Vente Venezuela political detentions in Venezuela
Overview
In late September 2026, members of the opposition party Vente Venezuela faced detentions by security forces during periods of civil unrest.
On September 24, activist Freddy Peñuela was released from detention in Guanare, Portuguesa state, after being held by the Bolivarian National Police. His arrest occurred amidst local protests regarding frequent power outages.
By September 27, tensions escalated in Zulia state. During a peaceful demonstration known as the ‘Gran Rodada Nacional por la Libertad’ in Maracaibo, the Bolivarian National Guard reportedly detained Vente Venezuela leader Fernando Torrealba. The protest was organized to demand the release of political prisoners and an electoral schedule for the 2027 presidential elections. Human rights organizations have described the detention of Torrealba as arbitrary.
