Veracruz agricultural sector pressures

In late July 2026 Veracruz coffee growers reported that imported beans from Brazil, Vietnam and Guatemala were being sold at roughly half the price of locally produced specialty coffee. The price gap—250 MXN per kilogram for Guatemalan beans versus up to 460 MXN for Veracruz shade‑grown Arabica—has made it hard for high‑altitude producers to compete, especially as transnational firms now control about 60 % of Mexico’s coffee market and quality checks on imports are often lacking.

The Regional Coffee Council and local entrepreneurs have called for reference pricing, stronger promotion of freshly roasted Mexican beans and policy measures to protect small producers and preserve the region’s Arabica heritage. A meeting of the Veracruz Coffee Chain Association is slated to discuss leadership changes and possible regulatory actions.

Within days the focus shifted to Veracruz’s sugarcane sector, which is contending with a severe outbreak of the barren‑borer worm and Fusarium fungus. The pests damage stalks and lower sucrose content, forcing mills to extend harvests or suspend operations and raising doubts about Mexico’s ability to meet U.S. sugar import requirements.

Together, the coffee price squeeze and the sugarcane pest crisis illustrate mounting economic and biological challenges for Veracruz’s agriculture, prompting renewed calls for government intervention and coordinated pest‑control measures.
