Verdi wage‑negotiation strikes in Germany
Overview
Verdi’s campaign for higher pay has continued into late July 2026. After warning strikes at university hospitals and retail stores in early July, a municipal‑waste strike in Saarbrücken on 17 July, and a pilot collective‑bargaining agreement for about 240,000 wholesale workers in Bavaria announced on 21 July, the union shifted its focus back to the broader retail and wholesale sectors. On 31 July and 1 August, Verdi called nationwide warning strikes in Berlin and Wiesbaden. A rally at Berlin’s Wittenbergplatz will feature former politician Gregor Gysi. The union is demanding a 7 % pay rise – at least €222 over a twelve‑month period – and, in Wiesbaden, an additional €250 monthly increase plus €150 for apprentices. Verdi warns that unsettled offers in Berlin and Brandenburg could push lower‑paid groups below the €13.90 net minimum wage. The actions target major chains such as Kaufland, H&M and Zara, and aim to leverage recent Bavarian gains toward a nationwide settlement.
