On October 22, 2026, 36-year-old Colombian national Grey Noralba Sanmartin Villalba was found dead in a rented apartment in the Cuirone district of Vergiate, Lombardy, with numerous stab wounds. Following the incident, 53-year-old Marco Panichi drove approximately 700 kilometers to his hometown of Avezzano, where he surrendered to the Carabinieri. Panichi reportedly confessed to the killing, though his legal counsel has argued that he acted in self-defense after the victim allegedly attacked him first. During interrogation, Panichi claimed the incident was a reaction to a dispute triggered by jealousy. A judge in Avezzano has since validated the arrest and ordered pretrial detention for Panichi. His defense has requested house arrest with an electronic bracelet, citing a lack of flight risk because the suspect turned himself in. Recent developments in the investigation include an autopsy conducted by authorities in Pavia. While the defense maintains that Panichi sustained knife wounds to his arms during an initial aggression by the victim, legal representatives have also described the motive as ‘paroxysmal jealousy.’ Friends of the victim have stated she never showed signs of violent behavior. The incident has left behind two minor children and family members in Colombia.
