The Johannes Vermeer exhibition at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka features the iconic painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. In preparation for the event, luxury jeweler MIKIMOTO released limited-edition pearl earrings inspired by the artwork, crafted from white-butterfly pearls, diamonds, and 18-carat white gold. Princess Aiko attended the opening ceremony on August 20, where she viewed the portrait and met with a Dutch delegation. This loan from the Mauritshuis museum—made possible by scheduled maintenance at the Dutch institution—marks the first time the painting has been loaned to Japan in 14 years. Martine Gosselink, director of the Mauritshuis, noted that the renovation provided a unique opportunity to share the work and observed that the artwork is treated with “near-sacred reverence” in Japan. Experts suggest this may be the final time the painting travels such a great distance. The exhibition, which runs until September 27, includes 12 works from the Mauritshuis collection, such as Vermeer’s ‘Diana and her Nymphs’ and works by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. Due to the immense popularity of the piece, the museum’s ticket system crashed during pre-sales, forcing organizers to implement a lottery system for entry. The display includes a unique presentation where the painting is shown alongside a large Miffy figure dressed as the subject of the portrait. Accompanying the event are various commercial releases, including ‘The Masters Collection’ cross-stitch kits from DMC and special merchandise collaborations with Miffy and the manga series ‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’. Additionally, the Regal Royal Hotel Osaka has launched a collaborative menu inspired by themes of light, blue, and pearls. To support the exhibition, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Osaka organized a panel discussion featuring female leaders from the art and business sectors to explore culture and strategic partnerships.
