Vermont is preparing for its upcoming general election, featuring races for state and county offices, the state’s U.S. House seat, and two ballot items. The gubernatorial race features incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott against progressive Democrat newcomer Amanda Janoo. Recent polling has shown significant divergence regarding the candidates' standing. A Green Mountain State Poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center between September 17 and 21 found Janoo in a statistical tie with Scott, with 49 percent support compared to 43 percent for the incumbent. This poll noted Janoo has increased support since winning the Democratic primary in August. Scott’s campaign manager, Dustin Degree, criticized this data as a misleading “outlier” and “statistical malpractice,” while professor Bert Johnson stated the methodology appeared to be “honestly conducted.” In contrast, a subsequent poll from Vermont Public indicates a shift, showing Scott holding a 10-point lead with 44 percent of the vote to Janoo’s 34 percent, alongside 16 percent of undecided voters. Scott’s campaign has characterized the Vermont Public poll as more accurate, noting that public polling often undervalues his support. Analysts suggest the discrepancy between the two polls may stem from differing methodologies or the volume of undecided voters. The Vermont Public poll also indicated that former Democratic Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray leads Republican incumbent John Rodgers by eight points. Campaign finance data indicates the race is becoming increasingly competitive. In September, Janoo raised $291,000, outperforming Scott, who raised $223,240. Janoo has received support from figures including State Treasurer Mike Pieciak, U.S. Senator Peter Welch, and Ben & Jerry’s co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. While Janoo has a higher monthly fundraising total, Scott maintains a slightly higher cash reserve of approximately $295,845 compared to Janoo’s $280,000.
