Germany’s Lageso reported three Vibrio infections among residents over 75 years old on 28 July, one fatal, associated with wound contact in warm coastal waters of Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern. The Robert Koch Institute and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment warned that bathing in sea water above 20 °C poses a heightened risk of severe infection and sepsis for individuals with open wounds or weakened immunity. On 27 July 2026, Berlin’s health authority (Lageso) recorded three additional Vibrio cases among elderly patients, one of which was fatal. Two infections were linked to wound or skin contact with brackish water in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, echoing the earlier Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern cluster. The report noted an early‑season rise in cases as Baltic Sea temperatures exceeded 20 °C, reinforcing warnings that open wounds markedly increase the risk of severe infection for the elderly and immunocompromised.
