Overview

In early July 2026 the Victorian government recognised its bushfire recovery system was largely reactive and under‑funded. A follow‑up report released on 29 July expanded the picture, finding that over 440,000 ha had burned – a greater area than the 2009 Black Saturday fires – destroying 451 homes, 1,110 outbuildings and causing extensive damage to crops, livestock, fodder, infrastructure and productive land. The report called for assessment of primary‑producer losses, road‑access provisions for agricultural use, mechanisms for veterinarians and licensed firearm owners to reach properties for livestock euthanasia, and lobbying for more affordable insurance for fire‑prone communities. The state government was given six months to act on the recommendations.
