In early October 2026, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck southeast Victoria, Australia. The initial tremor occurred near Leongatha at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, waking residents in Melbourne, Geelong, and Traralgon. Geoscience Australia received between 14,000 and nearly 20,000 reports of the shaking. Subsequent reports indicated the earthquake struck near Arawata, northeast of Korumburra. The event was accompanied by hundreds of aftershocks, including a magnitude 3.1 tremor. While residents reported hearing a “loud bang” and experiencing rattling windows, no serious injuries or significant property damage were confirmed. Experts noted that the Gippsland region is a zone of heightened seismic activity, having experienced larger magnitude events in previous decades. On the night of Wednesday, October 7, a magnitude 3.2 aftershock with an epicentre near Leongatha was reported by more than 2,000 people. Adam Pascale, chief scientist at the Seismology Research Centre, warned of an “increased likelihood of equivalent or larger seismic events in the short term” following this activity. Pascale noted that the Korumburra region experienced a similar pattern in 2009, where significant tremors occurred within two weeks of one another.
