Victoria work from home legislation delays

Overview

The Victorian government has delayed the implementation of controversial Work From Home (WFH) reform legislation. Initially scheduled to begin on September 1, 2024, the start date was pushed to July 1, 2025, to allow for further consultation following criticism from 12 business and employer groups.

By mid-September, the Carroll Cabinet halted plans to legislate a right to work from home at least two days per week. The decision to not schedule an extra week of Parliament means the measure will not be debated before the state election on November 28. While the laws had previously passed the Legislative Assembly, business advocates, including the Australian Industry Group, described the postponement as a “significant victory.” Labor sources suggested the delay might be a strategic move to make the WFH laws a central election issue.
