Vienna Reichsbrücke bridge collapse

On the early morning of 1 August 1976 the historic Reichsbrücke spanning the Danube in Vienna collapsed at about 04:40 a.m. A car driver was killed and a city bus plunged into the river; its driver survived with minor injuries. The failure was later traced to inadequate compaction of sand and concrete in the bridge’s left pier, which allowed water infiltration and structural weakening. The disaster prompted immediate inspections of Vienna’s other Danube bridges, led Mayor Leopold Gratz to convene a crisis team, and sparked political fallout that resulted in Gratz’s brief resignation and the departure of bridge official Fritz Hofmann.

The incident spurred extensive traffic‑policy reforms, including the acceleration of the U‑line U1 extension and a renewed focus on bridge safety. A federal reconstruction plan was approved on 3 August, and a new Reichsbrücke opened in November 1980. The bus that fell with the bridge was repaired, stayed in service until 1989, and now resides in Vienna’s Remise museum. On 1 August 2026, Vienna marked the 50th anniversary of the collapse, recalling the investigation findings, the reconstruction effort, and the long‑term impact on the city’s infrastructure and political landscape.
