In July 2026 2026, Vietnam’s state‑run state-run telecom giant Viettel signed an early‑access early-access agreement with Qualcomm, becoming the program’s first global partner. The deal commits Viettel to co‑research, co-research, design, produce and trial 6G base‑station base-station equipment, with a goal of showcasing a pre‑commercial pre-commercial 6G voice call by early 2029. A week later later, the government highlighted Vietnam’s rapid progress in 5G – now 5G—now covering roughly 2,500 sites and ranking ninth worldwide for mobile broadband speed – and speed—and announced a coordinated push toward 6G. A new 6G Steering Committee will oversee trials slated for 2028 and commercial rollout from 2029, with Viettel’s Military Industry and Telecoms Group slated to lead early trials and contribute to global standards. The move is part of a broader digital‑transformation digital-transformation agenda that includes a high‑tech high-tech park, expanded semiconductor efforts and streamlined e‑visa e-visa and digital ID services for foreigners. By August 2026, Vietnam reported accelerating its 6G preparations by leveraging experience from 4G and 5G networks to shorten research and commercialization cycles. The Ministry of Science and Technology’s steering committee aims to facilitate early participation in international standard-setting. While domestic companies have already manufactured approximately 250 5G stations, the nation has set broader 2030 targets, including 99% 5G coverage and 100% fiber optic access with speeds of at least 1 Gbps.
