A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, flying from Munich to Hanoi, experienced a major technical incident during takeoff at Munich Airport. The aircraft utilized nearly the entire runway and only became airborne approximately 120 meters past the runway end, causing a tail strike and kicking up a large dust cloud. Following the incident, the crew entered a holding pattern for up to two hours to dump fuel and reduce weight. During the subsequent emergency return landing, the aircraft sustained damage to its main landing gear and tires, with reports indicating tires burst and produced visible smoke. All passengers and crew members were reported safe, though more than 250 passengers required evacuation via bus. Investigations are being conducted by German authorities and the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation. Key areas of inquiry include why the crew did not abort the takeoff earlier, potential issues with blocked right-side brakes, and the analysis of flight data and cockpit voice recorders. The incident resulted in the temporary closure of Munich Airport’s north runway for cleanup and repairs. Aviation expert Heinrich Großbongardt noted the severity of the event, stating that the incident could have resulted in a ‘fireball with hundreds of deaths’ had the pilots not successfully pulled the aircraft up. While the investigation is expected to last months, experts noted that the severity of this incident does not necessarily call into question the fundamental safety of the Dreamliner series.
