Vietnam banking sector credit support initiatives

Overview

Following directives from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), commercial banks have initiated preferential credit programs to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and key economic sectors. The goal of these initiatives is to lower borrowing costs by at least 1% compared to market averages to stimulate production and economic growth.

Major state-owned lenders, including Agribank, BIDV, Vietcombank, and VietinBank, have committed significant credit packages, with Agribank targeting sectors such as agriculture, high-tech manufacturing, and semiconductors through a VNĐ70 trillion program.

As the initiative progressed, specific banks announced further concrete measures. Sacombank reduced lending interest rates by 2% for import-export customers and deployed between 10,000 and 15,000 billion VND in preferential credit for priority sectors and foreign-invested enterprises. Vietcombank also allocated 50,000 billion VND to reduce interest rates for businesses by a minimum of 1%. These actions follow high-level coordination between the Prime Minister, the SBV, and various credit institutions to address interest rates, credit expansion, and systemic safety.
