Vietnam data fraud and telemarketing prosecution

Overview

Vietnamese authorities have completed the prosecution of 181 individuals involved in a large-scale data fraud operation. The scheme involved the trafficking of over 1.1 billion pieces of personal data to defraud more than 5,400 victims of nearly 40 billion VND.

According to the Supreme People's Procuracy, the ring specifically targeted elderly individuals through internet calling services. Perpetrators posed as medical staff and offered fake prizes, such as “10 months of free bird's nest water,” to lure victims into paying shipping fees before executing larger scams. The operation involved the purchase of massive datasets from social media sources to facilitate these fraudulent activities.
