Vietnam digital finance and innovation push

In late July 2026 the Vietnamese government announced a sweeping financial‑market reform that tasks the State Bank of Vietnam with researching and piloting a central bank digital currency (CBDC) by 2029‑2030, while also establishing a new legal framework for digital assets and licensed exchanges. The reform aims to position Vietnam among early adopters of a national digital currency and align its market with international standards.

The following day, Vietnam highlighted its broader digital transformation agenda at the Vietnam Global Innovation Forum. Leaders emphasized the rapid digitalisation of banking services, with a major commercial bank targeting billions of transactions in 2026, and called for international collaboration on data, AI and automation. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs promoted an expanded network of honorary consuls to support citizens abroad, foster economic diplomacy and attract investment, underscoring the country’s push to integrate digital finance with global outreach.
