In late July and August 2026, Vietnam experienced rising energy costs. Initially, retail LPG prices increased at the start of August following a rise in the global contract price to $630 per tonne. This led distributors to raise prices for both household and industrial cylinders. By August 20, fuel prices also saw an upward adjustment following two previous sessions of declines. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Trade implemented hikes for various gasoline and diesel types. Officials attributed these market trends to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically citing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and peace negotiations between the US and Iran. As of August 20, global commodity markets remain volatile. Crude oil prices have risen, with Brent approaching $94 per barrel and WTI at approximately $86.64 per barrel, driven by supply concerns regarding potential U.S. economic sanctions on Iran and shipment disruptions. In response to these international trends, domestic fuel prices in Vietnam have adjusted upward, with diesel seeing notable increases.
