Vietnam is managing various aspects of its national expressway network, focusing on both infrastructure expansion and traffic monitoring. In late September 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc directed authorities to evaluate proposals for the temporary free operation of the Huu Nghi - Chi Lang and Dong Dang - Tra Linh expressways during the 2027 Lunar New Year. These projects are considered vital for connecting northern border provinces with Hanoi and supporting international trade. To ensure progress, local authorities were tasked with completing land clearance by October 2026 and increasing stone mine capacity for construction materials. Concurrently, the Vietnam Road Administration addressed a decline in vehicle traffic recorded in September 2026 on the North-South Eastern Expressway and National Highway 1. Officials attributed the decrease to seasonal shifts, such as students returning to school, rather than toll costs or safety regulations. Despite the dip, expressway volume remained 3.7% higher than the monthly average recorded since toll collection began in March 2026. In early October 2026, the Vietnam Road Administration clarified that while September traffic saw a 14.4% decrease compared to August, volumes remained 3.7% above the seven-month average. Regarding safety, the administration emphasized that maintaining safe following distances is a mandatory requirement aligned with the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and domestic laws.
