VinSpeed, a subsidiary of Vingroup, has signed a contract worth approximately 1 billion euros with Siemens Mobility to develop high-speed rail lines in Vietnam. The agreement covers the Hanoi-Quang Ninh (Ha Long) route and the Ben Thanh-Can Gio route. Siemens Mobility will supply ten Velaro Novo train sets capable of speeds up to 350 km/h, alongside signaling, electrification, communication, and system integration services. VinSpeed remains responsible for project development, track construction, and civil infrastructure. The Hanoi-Quang Ninh line, spanning roughly 120 km through Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh, aims to reduce the travel time to Ha Long Bay to approximately 23 minutes. Regarding this line, local authorities in Quang Ninh province have been working toward a September 30, 2026, deadline to complete land clearance. As of mid-September 2026, approximately 175.62 hectares of the required 273.41 hectares had been handed over, with Tuan Chau and Mao Khe reaching 100% completion. On the national level, Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has engaged with German authorities and industry leaders, including Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn, to discuss the 1,541-km North-South high-speed railway project. Targeted for completion by 2035, the project features 23 passenger and 5 freight stations. Deputy Minister Bui Xuan Dung emphasized selecting modern technology to ensure system interoperability and to allow Vietnam to build “independent operational and maintenance capacities” to avoid dependence on a single supplier. In October 2026, the Velaro Novo technology is expected to be showcased at the VRT&CON international exhibition and conference in Hanoi. Furthering the Ben Thanh-Can Gio route, VinSpeed this goal of technological autonomy, Minister of Construction Trần Hồng Minh has partnered with German firm Herrenknecht for a $4 billion high-speed rail project. To manage complex geological conditions emphasized that scientific research must be “breakthrough rather than merely innovative.” He has urged the industry to research foundational and dense urban infrastructure between Ben Thanh Station core technologies to develop products comparable to those from China, Japan, and Europe, aiming to create national scientific brands. The preliminary total investment for the Muoi Port area, Herrenknecht will deploy a specialized 13.6-meter diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). North-South project is estimated at over 1.7 quadrillion VND (approximately 67 billion USD).
