Vietnamese banks are adjusting service fees for SMS banking notifications, citing rising telecommunications costs. Starting September 1, 2026, VietinBank implemented a structure where customers receiving 14 or fewer messages per month are charged a flat fee of 16,500 VND (including VAT), while those receiving 15 or more messages are charged 880 VND per SMS. Vietbank introduced a volume-based policy: customers receiving between 0 and 20 messages per month pay a total of 16,500 VND (including VAT). For usage exceeding 20 messages, a base fee of 15,000 VND is applied plus 800 VND for each additional message, capped at 200,000 VND (excluding VAT) per month. Additionally, Agribank has restricted its service to only send notifications for transactions valued at 50,000 VND or higher. Banks are encouraging customers to transition to mobile or internet banking applications to avoid these increasing costs. These fee adjustments by VietinBank and Vietbank are occurring alongside broader operational changes in the sector, including the State Bank of Vietnam transitioning nine banking-related administrative procedures to the National Public Service Portal starting September 2, 2026.
