Overview

In Venice, social media creators and civic activists have initiated a controversial campaign to target suspected pickpockets in crowded areas. The group, led by Mervin Dayagro (known online as ‘Mervin D. Hunter’) and accompanied by two British content creators, uses methods such as marking individuals with red spray paint or water pistols to make them identifiable. These actions are filmed for social media, where clips have garnered hundreds of thousands of views.

These activities have resulted in violent street confrontations in areas like Rialto and Piazzale Roma, involving projectiles such as stones, chairs, and glass, as well as pepper spray. In one instance, the group used a spray gun, prompting suspects to retaliate with stones and pepper spray. These clashes have occasionally impacted bystanders, including children and the elderly. Venice Mayor Simone Venturini has condemned the activities, stating they are performed ‘solely to collect social media likes and disrupt public order’, noting that such behavior damages the city’s reputation. In response, the city plans to deploy 50 additional police officers by the end of the year.

Similar violent confrontations have been reported in Florence, where suspects have been pursued following alleged thefts from tourists.

In response to rising theft concerns, Italian law enforcement has intensified operations. In Venice, the Local Police anti-pickpocketing squad recently apprehended eight individuals, including five people at the Santa Lucia Station pier attempting to steal from American tourists. In Rome, railway police conducted a crackdown at Roma Termini station, resulting in three arrests, including two Algerian nationals caught stealing luggage from passengers on a high-speed train.
