In early September 2026, significant Viking-era silver hoards were discovered in Denmark and Finland. In Rebild, Denmark, a homeowner uncovered approximately 18.5 kilograms of silver, including bars, jewelry, coins, and a Thor’s hammer pendant. Torben Sarauw of North Jutland Museums noted the find provides “rare insight into the Viking silver economy” and is nearly three times larger than the previous record-holder. Further details from the The Danish discovery reveal the hoard contains roughly 700 objects and fragments, such as silver ingots, bracelets, and various pieces of cut silver. While some items were scattered, approximately 320 remained within the original clay vessel used for burial. Archaeologists believe the collection dates to the 10th century, a finding supported by the presence of two Anglo-Saxon silver pennies minted under King Edward the Elder. Additionally, one artifact features runes that may translate to ‘hutu’, which could signify a name or mark of ownership. The find suggests the local area served as a significant hub for Viking Age trade networks. Shortly after, in southern Finland near the Sysmä church village, amateur metal detectorist Kalle Lappinen discovered a hoard weighing approximately 4.5 kilograms. Found in a forest and buried about 18 inches underground, the treasure was distributed between two birch bark containers. The find includes thousands of silver coins, a silver bracelet, a clasp, a bead, and a silver fragment. Archaeologist Esko Tikkala of the Lahti Historical Museum led the excavation. Recent analysis of the Sysmä site indicates the collection includes silver dirhams from the Islamic world, as well as coins originating from regions that are now part of Germany, Sweden, and England. In October 2026, a third major discovery was reported in Norway near the town of Rena. Archaeologists located over 3,000 silver coins dating from 980 to 1050 AD near the Glomma River. The collection includes coins minted in England, Germany, Denmark, and Norway, featuring rulers such as Emperor Otto III, King Ethelred II, King Cnut the Great, and Harald III Hardrada.
