A homeowner in Rebild, Denmark, discovered the largest known Viking Age silver hoard in the country while preparing a garden for a new terrace. The find, dating to the 10th century, consists of approximately 700 objects and fragments weighing a total of 18.5 kilograms. According to Nordjyske Museer, the collection includes silver bars, bracelets, roughly 50 coins or coin fragments, and a small pendant shaped like Thor’s hammer. The presence of Anglo-Saxon pennies—specifically from the reign of Edward the Elder—and Arabic dirhams suggests extensive Viking-era trade networks. Torben Sarauw, head of cultural heritage at Nordjyske Museer, noted that the hoard provides significant insight into Viking economic practices. The collection, which includes silver bars with potential runic inscriptions such as ‘hutu’, functioned as a structured wealth system where silver served as both a medium of exchange and a store of value, acting as a “safe” based on weight rather than just individual coins. Further details reveal that approximately 320 of the ~~items~~ items, weighing 6.4 kilograms, were found preserved within a ceramic vessel, while the remaining objects were scattered in the surrounding soil.
