A conspiracy theory has gained viral traction on social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and X, claiming that Brazilian footballer Vinícius Júnior has been replaced by a lookalike. Proponents of the theory suggest the Real Madrid striker was killed or disappeared following the 2026 World Cup and was substituted by a double to fulfill advertising contracts. Those spreading the rumors cite perceived physical changes, such as variations in facial features, voice, and the absence of specific tattoos, as evidence. Some extreme versions of the disinformation involve claims of involvement by intelligence agencies, global elites, or extraterrestrial themes. These unfounded rumors have surfaced alongside a period of inconsistent on-field performance. During recent matches for both Real Madrid and the Brazil national team, including a game against India, Vinícius has struggled to maintain his usual form, drawing criticism from fans and media. While Vinícius Júnior has publicly addressed his need for increased self-confidence following a difficult World Cup, Real Madrid and his ~~coach has~~ coaching staff have expressed ~~support,~~ continued support. The club has characterized his recent dip in statistics as a temporary lack of physical conditioning rather than a cause for concern regarding his status in the squad. The claims ~~are~~ remain categorized as baseless internet disinformation.
