Authorities in Quito, Ecuador, have responded to several distinct incidents of violence and crime. In the northern part of the city, police addressed a road rage incident involving a mother and son who allegedly struck an elderly driver following a vehicle collision. In the Comité del Pueblo sector, two men were apprehended and faced legal proceedings for the attempted homicide of a 25-year-old man who sustained knife wounds. On November 5, 2026, five armed men robbed a bank in the La Pradera sector, stealing approximately 6,000 dollars. The perpetrators reportedly fled the scene on three motorcycles after threatening security personnel with firearms. Investigators are examining a possible link between this robbery and an explosive device found at the Complejo Judicial Norte, as well as a bomb alert at a gas station. Security forces responded to an abandoned backpack containing explosive emulsions and fuses at the entrance of the North Judicial Complex. Surveillance footage showed an individual abandoning the bag, which reportedly included a banner with the message, “Todos van a morir”. This threat forced an evacuation and the suspension of a high-profile hearing regarding the assassination of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Patricio Almendáriz, commander of Zone 9 of the Metropolitan District of Quito, stated that investigators believe the same individuals responsible for the bank heist may have left the explosive device at the judicial complex, or used it as a distraction to facilitate the robbery. Separately, a judge in Pichincha has ordered seven individuals to trial for their alleged role as indirect authors in the 2023 assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. The defendants include former Interior Minister José Serrano, former assemblyman Ronny Aleaga, businessman Xavier Jordán, Daniel Salcedo, and leaders of the criminal organization Los Lobos: Wilmer Chavarría, Esteban Aguilar, and Luis Arboleda. The judge ruled there is sufficient evidence regarding the financing, planning, and execution of the crime. Three individuals, Jordán, Chavarría, and Aleaga, have been declared fugitives as they are currently outside of Ecuador.
