Legal and social developments in Oaxaca highlight ongoing issues with homicide and violence against women. In one instance, a judge sentenced Inocencio R. S. to 210 years in prison for the 2020 murders and feminicides of 15 people, including members of the indigenous ikoots community. The attack, which occurred during a civil protest in San Mateo del Mar, was linked to social divisions regarding wind energy projects and local economic disputes. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the defendant to pay 6,516,000 pesos in reparations to the victims' families and a fine of 86,880 pesos. The victims included 13 men and two women from the ikoots community who were killed in Huazantlán del Río. Separately, reports from the civil society group Consorcio para el Diálogo Parlamentario y la Equidad indicate a high rate of violence against women in the state. The organization recorded 66 female murders in Oaxaca during the first ten months of 2026, with killings occurring across various regions including the Costa, Istmo de Tehuantepec, and Sierra Sur.
